A Little History
The Aloha Café opened September 6, 2018. It’s the fifth Macrina Bakery and Café. The space, on the corner of 19th and Aloha, was once occupied by the Surrogate Hostess, a community bakery. An extensive remodel uncovered rough-hewn dark wood planks on the walls, which became the backdrop for the white-tiled open kitchen. An expansive natural light-filled seating area has several communal tables designed for gathering with close friends or getting to know your neighbor. Long marble counters display Macrina's favorite breads, pastries, cakes, pies and many savory items.

ABOUT Joshua Kull
Joshua Kull has worked as a ride operator at an amusement park, as a concierge at a hotel, as a florist, at an Urban Outfitters, at a NYC bar, at a supermarket, a country club, and a corporate juice bar in Los Angeles; a Jack of all trades! In 2019, looking to make a lifestyle change, they moved to Seattle with their brother. They applied for a job at Macrina’s SODO bakery—and found a home.
“I’d been working for a big corporation in Los Angeles,” says Joshua. “Macrina was a big change. The owners come in frequently. I see Leslie often. Interacting with the people who lead the company is cool, and the fact that they know my name, ask about me, and care, is amazing. You don’t find that a lot. Especially in a company with this kind of reach in the greater Seattle area.”
Joshua worked their way up at the Sodo café from associate to shift lead to assistant manager and in June 2022 accepted the job as General Manager of our Aloha café. Diana Yelton, Aloha’s longtime GM, trained them. “I miss Diana already,” Joshua said. “But I love the café and crew. The customers are fantastic. There are a lot of families and people who live in the neighborhood.”
While Joshua’s job includes some office work, you’ll usually find them on the floor interacting with customers. “I’m a people person. I enjoy meeting our regulars, getting to know their names, and interacting with the crew.”
